Anna May Gainfort, 95, of Whiting, NJ, passed away at the Pines Village in Whiting, NJ on May 11, 2025. She was born on April 11, 1930, in Newark, NJ, to Samuel Jacob Gainfort, Jr. (1985, Vallejo, CA) and Roxana Atkinson (1983, New Brunswick, NJ).
Anna May grew up in Newark, NJ and graduated from East Side High School in 1948. Upon graduation, at the age of 18, she started her career at Prudential Life Insurance Company and dedicated many years of service before retiring in 1984.
A skilled and passionate bowler, Anna May competed in tournaments across the country and enjoyed the sport both locally and nationally. She found great joy in the sport and valued the camaraderie it brought.
Anna May was a devoted parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Whiting, NJ where she was a member of the Rosary Altar Society. She ran the Bingo kitchen for many years, ensuring a welcoming and enjoyable experience for all who attended. She was a devoted member of the weekend collections counting team, playing a vital role in maintaining the church's financial integrity.
In addition to her service at the church, she gave back to her community by volunteering at America's Keswick Addiction Recovery Center in Whiting, NJ where she found fulfillment in helping others.
She was predeceased by her brother and his wife, Samuel Gainfort (1989, Sparta, NJ) and Susan Eckstein (2014, Norwich, NY); her sisters and their husbands, Roxanne Gainfort (2008, Manassas, VA) and Robert Mennitt (1990, New Brunswick, NJ), Geraldine Gainfort (2017, Manchester Township, NJ) and William Cook (2016, Toms River, NJ), and Margaret Gainfort (2017, Clifton, NJ) and Robert Liashek (2004, Whiting, NJ); and her nephews, Richard Gainfort (2018, South New Berlin, NY) and Samuel "Michael" Gainfort (2025, Johnson City, NY).
She is survived by 10 nieces and nephews, 13 great-nieces and nephews, 10 great-great-nieces and nephews, and 5 great-great-great-nieces and nephews.
Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, Whiting, NJ, is in charge of arrangements. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, May 14, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 30 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ at 10:45 a.m. to celebrate her life, followed by entombment at 1:30 p.m. in the mausoleum (Section 19, Row I, Level 6, Crypt #324) at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens, 1098 Woodbridge Center Drive, Woodbridge, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 30 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ 08759.
