Obituary

Arthur B. Byrd, Sr., age 94 of Whiting, NJ was a loving and devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, who went on to his eternal resting place, on April 19, 2023.

He lived such a good life that was filled with all the love in the world and he was surrounded by nothing but that incredible amount of love of his family, which meant everything to him. He passed with his beloved and cherished wife Peggy at his side. A good man and a kind man, truly adored by us all. He loved without measure. We are all blessed and better because of the love that he gave to us and the love that we shared with him. He will never be forgotten and will forever be adored and missed by all of us.

Arthur was born in Buffalo, NY in 1928 to the late Louis K and Josephine Bane (Kecskés). As a young 3-year-old child and after the death of his parents, he was taken in by his late Aunt, Laura (William) Byrd who was the only mother that he knew. She loved him dearly and cared for him as her own while living in the Silver Beach section of Bronx, New York and for all of her life. Once a teenager Arthur and his Aunt Laura moved to New York City where he attended and graduated from the High School of Commerce in 1947. He was known by his friends as "Buffalo" and he aspired to be a commercial artist and photographer. He started working part time at the age of 14 in the produce department with the grocery store chain Safeway in the Village in NYC, which blossomed into his career in supermarket management later working for Finast, Shop Rite and Foodtown. He was known for his beautiful displays and end caps that he took pride in designing, where he often won many regional contests for these displays over the years. Arthur was also very proud of his service, from the mid 1940's through early 1950's, with the National Guard. He was a lifelong Yankees fan and loved his ewspaper, which he spent hours reading every day, front to back.

Arthur spent his adult years living in Montvale and New Milford, NJ while raising his family. Arthur and his beautiful wife Peggy reunited after knowing each other many years before, while working in Finast in Dumont. They fell in love and thenmarried in 1995. They shared a truly wonderful and full life together, living in Dumont, NJ and Spring Hill, FL before settling in Whiting, NJ for the last 22 years.

Arthur leaves behind his devoted wife of 28 years Peggy Byrd; his children the late Scott Byrd, Larry (Karen) Byrd, Claudia (Gary) Van Vliet, Doreen (Elwood "Skip") Briggs, Cathy (Neal) Comstock and the mother of his children, the late Nancy Mott; also his children Diane (Jonathan) Lebenson; Arthur (Lauren) Byrd; JoAnn (Gerald) Bartoli and his late wife Mary Byrd, the mother of his children; his stepchildren the late Grace Carrin; James (Julie) Carrino; Patricia (Robert) Olson; Pamela White, Beverly ( Edwin "Ted") Pomeroy, Carolyn (Kevin) Blakeman, and John (Maria) Droge; as well as so many adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephews.
