Barbara S. Nolan, 77, of Whiting passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2022 at home. Born in Shenandoah, PA, she grew up in Middletown, PA and lived in New Providence and Sussex County for many years before settling in Whiting in 2013.
Mrs. Nolan was an English teacher for many years, she received her Bachelor's Degree from Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pa and then earned her Master's in English, from Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ; completing her thesis on the works of Flannery O'Conner, a writer with whom she had an exceptional affinity. She began her career at Hershey (PA) High School, moving on to Governor Livingston Regional High School and Glen Meadow Middle School, then finally at Vernon Township High School until retiring in 2010. She was a parishioner of Saint Elizabeth RC Church, Whiting. Barbara was a spiritual woman who loved her family and friends unconditionally. She was resilient, kind and gentle, but fiercely hardworking and would do anything for her family. Barbara never asked for much from anyone but gave generously to all. She enjoyed morning coffee on her porch surrounded by nature in her garden, going for long drives in the countryside to look at the fall foliage and spending time at the ocean. She was an avid reader and loved to play scrabble with friends. In her younger years she had a talent for sewing, making clothing for her children and cherished holiday costumes. But most of all she especially loved time spent with her grandchildren who gave her the affectionate nickname "Grammy Babs". She was loved and admired by her family, students, colleagues and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Barbara will be missed dearly.
She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Anna Shustack, and by her brother, Richard Shustack. She is survived by her husband, Richard Nolan; her children, Kathleen N. Heady and her husband Andrew of Middletown, NJ, Joseph K. Nolan and his wife Monica of Montague, NJ, and Erin M. Smith and her husband Andrew of Malvern, PA; her grandchildren, Ryan, Victoria, Liam, Charlotte and Eloise; her brother, Thomas Shustack and his wife Karen of Harrisburg, PA; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
