Cecil Bernard
Fernando
January 18, 1955 – October 17, 2025
Cecil Fernando of Whiting, NJ, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Born in Sri Lanka, Cecil came to the United States in 1986 to build a new life for his family. .Wherever he went, Cecil brought with him his natural charisma, a deep love for his family, and an enduring passion for music.
Music was at the heart of Cecil's life. He mastered multiple instruments including the trumpet, saxophone, mellophone, and trombone, and even taught himself how to play the piano. In Sri Lanka, he played in the Army Band, Superstars, and Talk of the Town—well-known groups that showcased his extraordinary talent. In the U.S., he performed all over the country with countless talented musicians, where his music became part of the fabric of cherished memories for many. He was a staple at Royal College events, Sri Lankan Medical Association of North America dances, and so many more Sri Lankan community activities. In 2005, Cecil began a new chapter in his musical journey by forming his own one-man band. His performances brought joy to friends, neighbors, and fellow community members, allowing him to keep doing what he loved well into his later years. Within the Sri Lankan community, he was affectionately known as "Trumpet Cecil."
He also combined his love for music with his enduring faith in God. He played trumpet in multiple church choirs for decades. He remained an active and beloved member of the Sri Lankan Catholic community, known not only for his music but for his warmth and generosity.
Cecil was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shayamali; his daughters, Upeka and Udara; his sons-in-law, Ravi and Chamath; and his cherished grandchildren, Amaya and Rehan.
He will be remembered for his sparkling personality, his lifelong dedication to music, and above all, his deep and abiding love for his family. He was a true friend to many. Cecil's legacy lives on in every note he played and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
