Deacon Christopher D. O'Brien Jr., 81, of the Whiting section of Manchester passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Son of the late Christopher and Elizabeth (Barkey) O'Brien, Deacon O'Brien was born in Bronx, NY, and moved to Keansburg as a child. He and his wife lived and raised their family in Hazlet before moving to Whiting in 2005. Prior to his retirement, he was the District Manager for Bob Kislin's Sporting Goods. A United States Marine Corps Veteran, he was ordained a Permanent Deacon in the Catholic Church for the Diocese of Trenton in 1984, serving at Saint Joseph Church in Keyport for many years, and later at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Whiting. He particularly enjoyed performing weddings and baptisms, especially when those who received those sacraments reminded him throughout the years. He did missionary work with the church in both Haiti and Jamaica, and was an active moderator of the CYO while serving in Keyport. He enjoyed the outdoors, and loved to fish and camp with his family. He was an avid gardener throughout his life, and enjoyed his days spent in the community garden with friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen (Veith) O'Brien in 2017, and by his siblings, Richard O'Brien and Anna O'Brien MacDonald. He is survived by his children, Diane Rabuffo and her husband Richard of Lincroft, Colleen Evans and her husband Robert of Hazlet, and Christopher D. O'Brien III and his wife Louise Opepe of South Toms River; his grandchildren, Nicole and Laura Rabuffo, Alycia Opepe-O'Brien, Kayla and Grace Evans, Mitterand and Risq Okemba; his great-grandchildren, Lleionna and Lorenzo Okemba; his brother, John O'Brien of Queens, NY; his sister, Jean O'Brien Reynolds of Keansburg; and many nieces and nephews and friends. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 from 4-7pm at Elizabeth Ann Seton RC Church, 30 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at 10:45am. Cremation will be private, with placement of the urn at the All Saints Columbarium at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Deborah Heart and Lung Center, Browns Mills, or to the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Food Pantry.
