Dennis J.
D'Agostino
July 31, 1957 – September 17, 2023
Dennis D'Agostino, an author, statistician, and the team historian of the New York Knicks, died suddenly on Sept. 16. A native of Brooklyn, Dennis graduated from Sleepy Hollow High School and Fordham University. He worked for the Associated Press as a writer and editor before joining the public relations department of the New York Mets. He was working for the Mets when they won the World Series in 1986, and he carefully preserved the champagne-stained jacket he had worn during their locker room celebration. He later joined the public relations department of the New York Knicks, writing their media guide, articles for their program, and scripts for the ceremonies they staged at Madison Square Garden. He moved to Huntington Beach, Calif., in 1999 and quickly became part of the local sports scene as a statistician for national and local TV and radio broadcasts of LA teams. He also became an official scorer for Major League Baseball. He wrote "This Day in New York Mets History," followed by "Garden Glory: An Oral History of the New York Knicks," about the Knicks; "Keepers of the Game: When the Baseball Beat was the best job on the paper," which told the stories of writers who covered major league baseball teams; and "Through a Blue Lens: The Brooklyn Dodger photographs of Barney Stein 1937-57," which presented photographs and the memories of people associated with the beloved "Bums." He is survived by his mother, Florence; his wife, Helene Elliott, his sister Jeanne and her husband Freddie Dorn, and his two adored nieces, Emilie and Charlotte.
