Obituary

McCAMBLEY, Ellen Irene Passed away on December 18, 2022, at Aristacare in Whiting, New Jersey. Born August 17, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to William Norbert McCambley, Sr. and Muriel Kent (Bartlett) McCambley. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Andrea Lorenz D'Alessandro, Sr. Dana Elise McCambley, SSJ; brother William Norbert McCambley, Jr.; and dear aunt, Norma Dale Bartlett of Whiting. Ellen is survived by her siblings: Sr. Anne McCambley, SSJ, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Carla Ortegon (Pedro), of Greenwood, Indiana; Rosemary (Jack) Conners, of Pennsauken, New Jersey; Maris McCambley (Mark Fowler), of South Charleston, West Virginia; and Joseph McCambley (Joan Zimmerman), of Fairfield, Connecticut. Ellen is also survived by the nieces and nephews whom she loved to care for as children and visit with as adults: Marta and Dana; Sean, Chris, and Jay; Elisabeth and Michael; Kate, Mary, Kevin, and Gregg; and Luke, Will, Jake, and Elysse. She will be mourned and deeply missed by her lifelong friends and beloved cousins, Sr. Nora Cunningham and Rita Cunningham, as well as her extended Canadian clan, with whom she took every opportunity to visit at the McCambley family homestead in Venosta, Quebec, Canada. Ellen spent her earliest years with her large family in a tiny Philadelphia rowhouse on North Hollywood Street, attending Corpus Christi Elementary School and Hallahan High School, before the family's move to Northeast Philadelphia. As a student at the new Cardinal Dougherty High School, she threw herself wholeheartedly into both studies and extracurricular activities, becoming captain of the girls basketball team (despite a hip disability that kept her on crutches) and editor of the student yearbook. In her spare time, she roped her sisters into appearing with her in musicals at the social hall of their new parish, Presentation B.V.M. Upon graduation in 1961, Ellen became a teacher at Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary School, where two successive classes of fifth graders had the privilege of learning from a talented, creative, patient, and intelligent woman. In the Autumn of 1963, Ellen was called to join the Dominican Sisters of Elkins Park. For six years, she dedicated her life to furthering the religious, educational, and ministerial mission of the Sisters, before returning to life as a layperson. As an educational consultant for the Archdiocese of New York, her work resulted in the establishment of a Lay Leadership development center on New York's Lower East Side. After her move to Manhattan, Ellen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College, CUNY in New York in 1975, and was awarded a Master of Arts degree from Fordham University in Bronx, New York in 1977. She was fortunate to have a wide and varied career, encompassing the academic, religious, business, and political arenas. At every stage, she sought to find the light that resides in each of us, and to nurture that light into a force for good in a troubled world. Her raison de'tre was the releasing of the creative spirit that is trapped under layers of life experience. She saw the creative spark in young children, which gradually dulled as they grew older, and was convinced that this creative flame needed to be rekindled. While Program Director at the American Management Association, she drew upon the expertise of well-known management experts, such as Peter Drucker, to educate CEO members on critical issues. However, Ellen's managerial and educational talents became manifest during her tenure at Bell Atlantic Corporation and its successive iterations (NYNEX and Verizon). There, after planning, creating, and managing a technologically state-of-the-art corporate law library for in-house counsel, she turned her talents to implementing the Accelerated Succession Affirmative Action Pilot, designed to recognize and promote talented minority and female employees. As Executive Development Staff Director, she was prescient in introducing executives to the benefits of distance learning via the Electronic University, and teleconferencing via the Bell Atlantic network. And as Tuition Plan Administrator, she spearheaded the Education Assistance Program that brought continuing education programs to a multitude of employees via home study, distance learning, and on-site classes. In her spare time, Ellen volunteered her considerable talents to the New York State Ministerial Advisory Board, the Religious Society of Friends New York Yearly Meeting, and the Powell House Retreat and Conference Center. Visitation will be held at The Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ, on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, from 11 a.m. - 1 pm. Interment will follow at the Church of Elizabeth Ann Seton, 30 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ. Family and friends will gather immediately afterwards at Heritage Family Restaurant, 108 Lacey Road, Whiting NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ellen's name to the children's shelter or animal rescue organization of your choice. However, if you do send flowers, yellow roses and sunflowers were her favorites.
