Obituary

Herbert William Jones, 93, of Whiting, NJ, went to be with the Lord on January 5, 2026. Herb was born in Philadelphia, PA to parents Marie (Dickson, from Scotland) and Herbert Jones (USA). He was born during the great depression, an economically challenging time for the USA and world where he and his parents lived with his grandparents from Scotland in a Philadelphia rowhouse. He grew up in Philadelphia PA and then resided in Lansdale, PA, and Princeton Junction, NJ, before settling in Whiting in 2001.

Herb became a believer in Jesus as Lord and Savior as a young adult. Faith was foundational to his life. Herbert knew Jesus, and more importantly, Jesus knew him. He would want you to know that we all sin and that we must acknowledge that sin big or small (Romans 3:23) and that we can accept Jesus as the savior from our sin (Romans 6:23; John 3:16). He was very involved in various local churches such as Calvary Baptist Church in Landsdale, PA, Westerly Road Church in Princeton, NJ, Windsor Chapel in Princeton Junction, NJ, and most recently, Whiting Bible Church in Whiting, NJ.

Herb served in the Navy during the Korean War on the Krishna repair ship from 1953 to 1954. After his time in the US Navy, he worked at Butterworth Inc while earning his mechanical engineering degree at Drexel University. He primarily worked as a mechanical machine engineer designer and did some electrical and structural engineering for various other engineering projects. In the 1970's, he became the lead engineer with Johnson & Johnson designing the assembly equipment for shampoo, bandaids, baby powder, and baby-diapers. He then worked as a mechanical engineer for Value Technology and eventually finished his career with the David Sarnoff Research in Princeton, NJ, updating their unique facilities until his retirement.

Herb especially loved to sail. He learned sailing in Sea Scouts in the 1940's on the Delaware Bay and River. In mid-life he sailed extensively in the coastal NJ bay waters. In retirement, he and Edith sailed in Florida and the Bahamas for five years on a 36' Catalina sailboat.

As an accomplished musician, Herb (Herbie) first learned the violin as a young child, then saxophone in high school, and later some piano. Other talents included water color and oil painting, producing many paintings that are cherished by his family and friends. He found great joy playing music for church services and in hospitals. He voluntarily played the violin and the saxophone at the Toms River Community Hospital, on the ICU and cancer floors.

He also strongly believed in higher education, promising his wife Edith that he would support a college plan for all of his five children. Supporting college for girls was progressive for the time period. As a result, 3 children became engineers, 1 an architect, and 1 New York fashion industry executive.

Herbert is preceded in death by his first wife of 56 years, Canadian born Edith Redmond Jones (2010), his second wife Geri Jones (2013) of Pennsylvania, and his oldest son Allan Jones (2010). Living is his lovely wife Elsie Bauch Jones, whom he married in 2015 in Whiting, NJ. Living are Donna Jones, the spouse of deceased son Allan, and the other four children Herb had with Edith: Elizabeth (Bruce) Ciccone, Dianne (Rick) Kling, Mark (Tammy) Jones and Tim (Nicole) Jones. Also living are sisters Caroline Frank and Eleanor Engel. He is blessed with 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, with two more great-grandchildren expected this spring.

The family is so thankful for all the wonderful people who assisted Herb in his final years at the Community Hospital, the Pines Village, at rehabilitation facilities, and especially at home.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, January 11, from 2:00 - 3:00 pm at Whiting Bible Church, 95 Lacey Road, Whiting, NJ 08759, followed by a service at 3:00 pm and then refreshments and a light buffet afterwards in the fellowship hall. There will be a private burial at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery.
