John N. Keenan passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving wife and family on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.
John was born in New York City, son of Thomas and Theresa Keenan on May 29, 1928. The youngest in a large family, John was raised in The Bronx along with his sisters, Lillian and Elizabeth, and brothers, George, Andy and Tommy. Upon his engagement to Annabelle Ross in 1954, he took a ride on a NJ Transit bus in search for a marital home. The first stop was Rutherford. He liked the town and decided this was where he wanted to live. John and Annabelle married, moved to Rutherford, made quick friends, raised four children and shared a wonderful life together.
John was a traffic manager and freight bill auditor. He worked for many years in NYC at Monsanto Textiles and later in Wayne, NJ at GAF. He also founded Garden State Traffic Bureau which he operated from his Rutherford home office.
John loved to plan family vacations and enjoyed day trips to parks, lakes, and beaches. One of his favorite destinations was Cave Hill, a family resort in Moodus, CT. In his free time, he enjoyed walking the family cocker spaniels, taking classes, and watching Barney Miller, Bob Newhart and British comedies. He was a "jack of all trades", always willing to help others. He was a parishioner of the Church of St. Mary, Rutherford and enjoyed volunteering his time. In 1996 Annabelle passed. He later met Anthonia (Tonny). They fell in love, married, and spent the next 22 years in Whiting, enjoying, life, family and friends. Anthonia lovingly referred to John as the "man of my dreams". He and Tonny enjoyed community bus trips to many destinations and their own excursions especially to Tonny's native Holland. They were parishioners of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
John is survived by his wife Anthonia, his four children, Dianne Parnofiello and her husband John, Thomas Keenan and his wife Dorothy, Laura McCarthy and her husband James, and John Keenan; and three step children, Brigitte Billis, Michael Kardell, and Scheherazade Frese. John was predeceased by his stepson, Marcel Kardell. He was the proud grandfather to John Parnofiello and his wife Adrianne, Jamie Parnofiello, Devon Marie Keenan, Christopher McCarthy, Justin Keenan, Matthew Keenan, Jack McCarthy, Caroline McCarthy and Katie McCarthy.
Known for his kindness, wit, and generosity, he was a true gentleman and a great husband and father. He will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
