Katherine Estelle Toomey, 89, of Whiting, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2011 at home. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she grew up in Forest Hills, NY and lived in Richmond Hills and Bellerose Manor Queens, before moving to Whiting in 1982. She was a coordinator for Selective Service in Jamaica, NY for 22 years, retiring in 1974. Katherine was a member of the Emergency Management Council, Residents Club and Safety Patrol of Crestwood Village VI. She was also a member of the C.E.R.T. Team of Ocean County. She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting. She was predeceased by her husband, James J. Toomey in 1996 and her son, Eugene in 1972. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Tina Toomey; two grandchildren, Sean Toomey and Lara Smoot and her cousin, Samuel Ballard. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 30th at Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered at 9 a.m., Monday, Oct 31st at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting. Entombment will follow at Whiting Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations to the American Red Cross or Crestwood Village VI Emergency Management, would be appreciated.
