Sister Carmela Marie (Susan Mary) Cristano, 83, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died August 1, 2011. The wake for Sister Carmela Marie will be held at Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2011 with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 30 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be on Friday, August 5, 2011 in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station, at 10:30 a.m. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Konopka Funeral Home, North Bergen, NJ. Sister Carmela Marie was born in New York City, NY, the daughter of Francis and Mary (Canonica) Cristiano. She entered the Sisters of Charity on March 25, 1945 and was a member for 66 years. Sister Carmela Marie graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, New Jersey with a B.S. in Education. She spent many years as an educator in NJ teaching at Our Lady of Sorrows School, South Orange; St. Rose of Lima, Newark; Immaculate Conception School, Long Branch; Sacred Heart School and St. Peter Elementary School, New Brunswick; St. Bridget's, St. Anne's, St. Peter's, and Sacred Heart Schools, Jersey City; St. Joseph's, Oradell; Mt. St. Joseph Children's Center, Totowa; St. Peter Elementary, New Brunswick; St. Anastasia, Teaneck; and Epiphany School, Cliffside Park. She also served as Director and then Administrator of the North Hudson Day Care Center, Guttenberg. In 1988, she became Executive Director of My Mother's House, Inc. in Browns Mills, NJ until her death. Sister Carmela Marie was predeceased by her brother, Vito Cristiano. She is survived by the Sisters of Charity; four sisters: Carmela Stang, Newbury NY; Francine Von Dreusche, Forked River, NJ; Rosemaria Myrah, Manahawkin, NJ, Margaret Cristiano, Concord, MA; and, one brother, Joseph Cristiano, Orleans, NE. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that contributions be made to the Sisters of Charity Development Fund, P.O.
