Sophie Furda passed away on June 27, 2011. Born, March 7, 1921 to Alexander and Hannah Shotyk, the third of 9 children, her family emigrated to the US shortly after her birth. "I was born on the ship" she would say. They settled in Westerd Pennsylvania around Union Town. During World War II, she worked in the defense industry, manufacturing radios in New Jersey.
After the war, she met Theodore Furda, a 20th Air Force veteran. They met on Valentine's Day in 1948 and were married on Halloween of the same year in St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Newark, NJ. They settled in Irvington, NJ, where they raised their six children.
She was active in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, as a class mother and Boy Scout widow, her husband being a Scout Master for over 25 years.
In 1993, they moved to Whiting, NJ where they have lived since. She was active in Crestwood Village 7, including volunteering to knot hats and sweaters for new borns for Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ.
She is survived by her husband, Theodore of 62+ years and their six children, Theodora, DOnald, Elaine, Stephen, Michael and Gary; Son-in-law, Michael Gnad; daughters-in-law, Alice, Christine and Donna Furda; grandchildren, Christopher, Bobby, Thurman, Patrick Michael and Hannah Sophie Furda, Alyssa D'Angelo and Daniel Ford.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral Saturday, July 2 at 8:30 a.m. from the Union Funeral Home-Lytwyn & Lytwyn, 1600 Stuyvesant Avenue, Union, NJ (www.unionfuneralhome.com) followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. at St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 719 Sanford Avenue, Newark, NJ, then to Pequest Union Cemetery, Great Meadows, NJ for burial. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 30 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, 28 Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ (www.manchestermemorial.net) and Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Union Funeral Home-Lytwyn & Lytwyn. Panachyda will be 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
